On Thursday 13th January 2022, Year 5 went on a trip to Kew Gardens. The trip was to support their learning in science and geography where, through the topic of The Changing Amazon, they have been learning about living things and their habitats and the Amazon Basin.
After travelling to Kew by train, the children were excited to see the famous Kew greenhouses, despite them being shrouded in fog!
They had the opportunity to explore the gardens and particularly enjoyed going into the temperate house where they experienced what it feels like to be in a rainforest.
The children also took part in workshops to support their learning in school. In the workshop, they enjoyed dissecting flowering plants and labelling each part. They also had the opportunity to investigate a range of seeds and make inferences about how they are spread based on their characteristics.
SS said that they enjoyed their trip and the most interesting part was learning about the flowers, particularly being able to use the microscope to look at the different parts in detail.
IP said that they enjoyed going into the greenhouses and finding out about the different species of palm trees. They particularly enjoyed the fact that it was so warm!
The year 5 children are now looking forward to learning more about the plant life in the Amazon as they continue their topic this term.
