FAQ’s Children Starting in Foundation Stage

Foundation Stage at Brentfield Primary School

At Brentfield Primary School, we believe the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) plays a key role in laying secure foundations for children’s future learning and development.

Welcome to our Nursery

In Rainbow class, we believe that there is no one way to achieve the very best for young children. A close partnership with parents and a range of teaching strategies are the keys for a successful emotional, social and academic future. Early education is about every aspect of a child’s development. It is about more than imparting knowledge. It is about providing a wide range of experiences and opportunities so that every area of development receives attention.

Play provides the natural, imaginative and motivating contexts for children to learn about themselves, one another and the world around them. A single moment of sustained play can afford children many developmental experiences at once, covering multiple areas of learning and reinforcing the characteristics of effective learning.

We use development matters to support children’s learning and development and as a guidance to assess them at the age related expectations.

Communication and language development is about giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment, developing their confidence and skills in expressing themselves, developing speaking, and listening in a range of situations.
Physical development in Early Years Foundation Stage provides opportunities for young children to be active and interactive and to develop their coordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.
Personal, social and emotional development means to help children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others, to form positive relationships and develop respect for others, to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings, to understand appropriate behaviour in groups and to have confidence in their own abilities.
In Literacy, children are learning to hear and distinguish different sounds (environmental, musical, body sounds and later to be able to hear 3 sounds and blend a CVC word
E.g. c-a-t, cat) Children are given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest.
Mathematics in Nursery provides children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems, to describe shapes and to explore spaces and measures.
Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.
Expressive arts and design in Early Years Foundation Stage enables children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.

We work very closely with parents and carers and your child and we encourage current and prospective parents to come and visit our Nursery throughout the year.

If you would like to come and visit us, please contact us via the school office on 0208 965 5326.

Welcome to our Reception Classes

The final year of the EYFS is the reception year. All children will come to Reception armed with previous learning and experiences. We value and build on these, ensuring that parents, carers, support staff and the early years practitioners work together effectively to support children’s learning and development throughout their time in Reception.

It is children’s right to grow up safe and healthy, and to have the opportunity to make a positive contribution to their school community, enjoying the sense of achievement that will come with every school day.

At Brentfield we:

  • Provide a broad, balanced, rich and stimulating curriculum and an exciting learning environment, which will enable each child to develop personally, socially, emotionally, spiritually, physically, creatively and intellectually to his or her full potential.
  • Value each child and place inclusion at the heart of everything we do. We provide a safe, challenging, stimulating, caring and sharing environment, which is sensitive to the needs of the child, including children with additional needs.
  • Provide opportunities for children to learn through planned, purposeful play in all areas of learning and development.
  • Enable choice and decision-making, fostering independence and self-confidence.
  • Work in partnership with parents/guardians and value their contributions.
  • Provide inclusive experiences for all children, whatever their needs.

We aim to create an attractive, welcoming and stimulating learning environment, which will encourage children to explore, investigate and learn through first-hand experience. We also aim to make it a place where children feel secure and confident, and are challenged to develop their independence. In addition to open-ended resources children can use to direct their own learning, there are planned activities both inside and outside. The learning environment is divided into different areas.

Your child will have access to:

  • role playing areas, book corner, writing area, maths activities and challenges, computer area, creative corner, sand, water, digging and growing area, music, stage or performing area, construction, small world and puzzles.

These are carefully arranged to give children a choice of quieter areas and more active areas within the learning environment.

Children are encouraged to become independent learners and take ownership of their learning by exploring their own questions and interests.

We aim that, throughout their time in our reception classes, our children will become confident individuals and develop a thirst for knowledge that will form a solid foundation for their on-going learning journey as they progress through our school.

We encourage prospective parents to come and see us so if you would like to arrange a visit, please contact us via the school office on 0208 965 5326.
